important Hindu temples in Southeast Asia. My Son ruins is an ancient Cham city
set in a small valley about 40km from Hoi An City. In fact, it was abandoned in
jungles for centuries until being discovered by a French scientist in 1898. The
earliest structures of the temple complex date back to the 4th century. Like so
much in Vietnam, the site was extensively damaged due to carpet bombings by the
American. Over time, the My Son Sanctuary has remained a mysterious appearance.
Hindu gods still quietly occupy elaborately carved stone niches in the temples
that survived. 
Culture, people and livelihoods
